Shirley Maune Obituary

Shirley Mae Maune, nee Schriewer, 87, of Washington, died  Thursday, March 2, 2023.  Shirley, daughter of the late Lawrence and Angeline Schriewer was born on January 26, 1936 in Washington, Missouri.  She received her education at St. Francis Borgia and studied at the Paul VI Institute of Theology.  On January 31, 1953 she was married to James J. Maune at St. Francis Borgia Church in Washington.  Their union was blessed with 9 children.

Shirley was a lifelong resident of Washington and a member of St. Gertrude Church, Krakow.  Even with a large family, a job, and all the other responsibilities she had, she always found time to share her passion for Catholicism, volunteer at Church for whatever was needed, and  support anti-abortion efforts.  She developed a love of sewing at an early age and earned her first sewing machine in 1952 by babysitting her two younger brothers.  She initially was hired as a “fancy-stitcher’ at Deb Shoe Company and went on to spend her sewing career at Hazel in Washington.  In her spare-time she sewed coats, clothes, bridesmaid dresses, and wedding dresses for 3 of her daughters and 1 daughter-in-law. One of her last sewing projects was a christening gown she made with her daughter and granddaughter for her great grandchildren. Her love of sewing showed in everything she made.

With God always first in Shirley’s heart, her family were the loves of her life.  She was always there to cheer them on and give them a hug after whatever they were doing.  She made sure to attend their events and always had a hug and “I’m so proud of you” immediately after.  Shirley loved to write and all her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren would look forward to special notes in the mail of thanks, encouragement, and love.

Shirley will be remembered by all who knew her as a person with a very special spirit who was always there to share her wonderful laugh and twinkling eyes with everyone she met.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James “Jim” Maune, her parents,  Lawrence and Angeline Schriewer, son, John F. Maune, daughter, Kathleen M. AuBuchon, son-in-law, Jerry Lakebrink, Grandson, Todd Hoelscher, brothers, Vernon (Katsie), Wayne (Annie), Kenneth (Jane) Schriewer, in-laws Albertha “Bert” (Bob) Breckenkamp, C.J. Maune, Whip (Millie) Maune, Virgil (Jerrine) Maune, Gerry (Leonard) Piontek, Millie Chisholm, Paul Schmuke and Helen Maune.
