Gertrude Filla (née Aholt),101, of Washington, passed away on June 3, 2020, in Washington. Gertrude was the daughter of the late Joseph Aholt and Christina (née Noelker). She was born on May 16, 1919, in Washington and was united in marriage to the late Richard Filla on August 15, 1942, at St. Francis Borgia Catholic Church. Gertrude graduated From St. Francis Borgia High School and was a life-long member of the St. Francis Borgia Parish. She was also a member of the St. Francis Borgia Ladies’ Sodality.
Gertrude enjoyed entertaining, gardening, homemaking, and cooking. Over the decades she held a variety of professional and non-professional jobs. Gertrude loved her big family and, first and foremost, her Catholic faith.
She is survived by her five children, Christine Dothage of LaBarque Creek, Missouri, Timothy R. Filla of Washington, Bethine Spaunhorst and husband Vernon of Washington, Benjamin Filla and wife Marilyn of Washington, Jennifer Hilgard and husband James of Godfrey, Illinois; two siblings, Raymond “Mike” Aholt and wife Mary Beth of Redmond, Washington and Mary Lou Schmidt and husband William of Evansville, Indiana and sister-in-law, Charla Mae Filla of Akron, Colorado; fourteen grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband Richard Filla; her parents, Joseph and Christina Aholt; parents-in-law, Andrew and Pauline Filla; one daughter-in-law, Donna Filla; three siblings, Ralph Aholt and wife Bernita, Leonard Aholt, and Verna Siess and husband Erwin, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Aloysius and Mary Filla, Alma Peters, Benedict Filla, Robert Filla and wife Martha, Virginia Shipman, Elmer and Myrtle Filla, Leander Filla, Anthony and Lucille Filla, Maurice and Leona Filla, and Norbert Filla.
A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Francis Borgia Catholic Church on Monday, June 8, 2020, at 10 a.m. Interment will be in the Church cemetery. Visitation will be on Sunday, June 7, from 3 p.m. until 7 p.m. The Rosary will be said at 6:30 p.m. at Nieburg-Vitt, Miller Funeral Home. Please be aware that wearing a face covering is required and that capacity will be limited due to physical distancing requirements; thank you for understanding. Memorial donations are appreciated to St. Francis Borgia Catholic Grade School.
