Darlene Barrett Kossina

Darlene Barrett Kossina (nee Heisel), of Washington, passed away on Friday, July 27, 2018 in Washington at the age of 87 years. She was born on September 15, 1930, the daughter of the late Robert and Viola (nee Buchholz) Heisel. As a young woman, Darlene was married to Harold Barrett in May of 1949, and two children blessed their union. Harold preceded her in death on February 13, 1964. Darlene married the late Lloyd Kossina in November of 1989. She loved farm life and was a longtime member of WPFA, the Women’s Progressive Farm Association, or as they liked to be called “Farm Club.”

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, July 31, 2018, at 10:30 am at St. Peter’s United Church of Christ. Interment will follow at the Church cemetery. Visitation will be on Monday, July 30, from 4 until 8 pm at Miller Funeral Home. Memorial donations are appreciated to the Alzheimer’s Association or to the National Kidney Foundation. Darlene’s family would like to thank all the staff at the Arbors at South Pointe and Mercy Hospice.

Darlene is survived by her daughter, Laurie Hellmann and husband Charlie of Washington; one daughter-in-law, Bette Barrett of Washington; four grandchildren, Scott Hellmann and wife Elizabeth of New Haven, Tara Hellmann of Washington, Jacque Owens and husband Chad of Washington, Jill Langford and husband Chuck of Washington; one grandson-in-law, Bernie Holdmeyer of Washington; nine great-grandchildren, William and Claire Hellmann, Logan, Brooke, and Parker Owens, Morgan and Carver Holdmeyer, and Marleigh and Weston Langford; four step-children, Paul Kossina and wife Nancy of Florida, Lynn Gabbert and husband Tim of Colorado, Laurie Gilbert and husband Kent of Bellflower, Missouri, and Jerry Kossina and wife Paula of Wildwood; one sister, Mary Straatmann; seven brothers, Jim Heisel, Dave Heisel and wife Karen, Gary Heisel and wife Sharon, Ed Heisel and wife Marilyn, Rich Heisel and wife Karen, Jon Heisel and wife Debbie, and Steve Heisel and wife Penny; one sister-in-law, Mary Frances Heisel; ten step-grandchildren; three step-great grandchildren; other relatives; and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands, Harold Barrett and Lloyd Kossina; one son, Hal Barrett; one granddaughter, Liz Holdmeyer; one great-grandson, Conner Owens; three brothers, Robert A., Bill, and Mike Heisel; one brother-in-law, Walt Straatmann; and one sister-in-law, Joan Heisel.
